We had a memorial service at the Davis Chapel of Old Cutler PCA at 7:00 PM on July 17, 2015. Eddie was an example of us leaving the 99 and going after the one “lost sheep.” Luke 15.
Edward Leslie Bergerson – DOB: 03/04/1946 – died 05/01/2015
Alive Again ministries had the honor of helping Eddie on his journey to salvation through Jesus Christ. Eddie came to us eight years ago as a homeless man addicted to alcohol, crack/cocaine and pornography. Eddie often attended the Alive Again meetings at Granada Presbyterian, Old Cutler Presbyterian, and Cross Bridge Church’s. Through years of ministry and fellowship, Eddie overcame his addictions to alcohol, crack/cocaine and pornography through the power of the Gospel.
Eddie died in a terrible house fire on May 1st of this year. The Alive Again folks were the only family Eddie had, and we have asked for and received his remains. Alive Again has paid his funeral expenses. We are having a worship service to remember Eddie and celebrate his life and salvation (07/17/2015). Please donate online to help us with his funeral costs.
Eddie asked me one night if I was really proud of him? I said “Eddie, you are a miracle and the Lord is teaching you to make Godly decisions – so yes I was certainly proud of him for doing the right thing that the Spirit was leading him to do. He told me that in all his 67 years on earth that no one had ever told him they were proud of him for anything.
We were blessed to know Eddie. He had come a long way. He was not cured of his disease, and he could still act out being a complete jerk, but God’s sanctifying grace was obviously and progressively delivering him. He suffered from blood/bone cancer.
Eddie is no longer suffering – he has all his teeth now. He is living eternally in glory and enjoying the Lamb’s Feast. It is so humbling to know that The Triune God used us to bring Eddie into the “forever family of God,” and we shall miss him beyond what we can express with mere human utterances.
I wrote a letter last year on March 24, 2014: “ We are ministering to millionaires and to the homeless – because addiction is no respecter of socio-economic position, nationality, age, sexual orientation, race, creed, politics, philosophical beliefs, or if you have teeth or not. Alive Again Ministries is privileged to serve a very wide spectrum of folks seeking to recover from a seemingly hopeless, helpless situation.”
Why was Eddie smiling toothlessly in the photo below? Eight years ago when I met Eddie, he was a homeless crack cocaine addict and an alcoholic. Today he has hope! At the same Alive Again Meeting where Eddie was photographed with a smile on his face, there was a 19-year-old university student from Norway, who is today, a grateful, joy-filled recovering alcoholic. His family are multi-millionaires. Money cannot buy you happiness, but the Gospel message of sanity in Ephesians 2: 1-10 brings us the everlasting joy of being alive in Jesus Christ. In recovery, we join with the Apostle Paul and say:
“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. ”
